The UNESCO Chair on Community Media has been invited by the Cyprus Community Media Centre (CCMC), based in Nicosia, Cyprus, to participate in a series of events from October 9-13, 2012 focusing on the role of civil society in promoting social change.

As part of the UNDP – Action for Cooperation and Trust (UNDP-ACT)-sponsored ‘Power of One’ conference that will be examining the role of social movements in the upheaval of the Arab Spring, and how democracy in the region can be fostered through closer collaboration with civil society partners in the surrounding region, CCMC wants to focus on how media can promote unheard voices, especially through community media.

In addition, CCMC is also launching its local advocacy campaign for Community Media, with the ultimate aim of legal recognition of the sector in Cyprus, but also raising awareness about how the sector can contribute to media diversity and pluralism, as well as social cohesion under increasingly tough social and economic conditions.

Chairholder Prof. Vinod Pavarala has been invited to attend these events and share his expertise and support the advocacy efforts in Cyprus for creating a more enabling policy environment for community media.
